COA Beach Sweeps COVID-19 Update
We hope you continue to stay happy and healthy in these challenging times. Clean Ocean Action has been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely, and our entire team remained optimistic that a modified form of the Beach Sweeps might be able to take place on April 25th. However, due to the extension of the federal lockdown through April 30, we will be cancelling the Spring Beach Sweeps this year to ensure public safety.

In 34 years, this is only the second time that the Beach Sweeps have been cancelled (the last time was due to a hurricane). In rain or shine, Beach Sweeps volunteers have showed their commitment to a clean ocean by getting feet on the beach and hands in the sand every April and October. Thanks to your town’s commitment to the Beach Sweeps, the program continues to grow its impact each year, inspiring and educating new volunteers and removing continuously greater amounts of debris from the marine environment. In a little over a month, over 2,300 volunteers already registered to participate in this year’s Spring Beach Sweeps. Those numbers suggest that we were on track for another year of record-breaking participation.

While this year’s Sweeps might not be record-breaking, they will certainly be memorable! Though we won’t be able to join together on the beach this April as a group of thousands of dedicated, ocean-loving volunteers, we remain optimistic that we will be able to do so again at the Fall Beach Sweeps on October 24, 2020.

Finally, we are as enthusiastic as ever to release the 2019 Beach Sweeps Report to highlight the impressive, record-breaking statistics from last year’s events. Stay tuned for the release of these awe-inspiring numbers next week!

We recognize that this is a challenging time for all municipalities across the state, and our thoughts are with all of you in these trying circumstances. Thank you for your support and continued enthusiasm for the Beach Sweeps. Save the date for the Fall Beach Sweeps on Saturday, October 24, and in the meantime, stay well.
